Welcome to the Platformer where we talk about games in an extremely amateur but fun way! This post is in regards to Sony PlayStation’s State of Play that aired on the 24th of September 2019 and you the reader will experience it through my field of view. As there were many announcements I will choose to focus on some stories more than others because they interest me whereas some other I will glance through.

New The Last of Us Part II Trailer

Joel’s stupid f$#@£ face.

I’m going to start with a disclaimer. The first game is a mechanical marvel, it’s unbelievable tense and drenched in wonderful design and atmosphere. The story on paper is intriguing and gripping and a wonderful tale of a young girl realising her place in the world and having to embrace the evil in her brave new world. However! Joel is the main character in that game and the number of times he mentally abuses everyone around him. Murders indiscriminately, despite believing he’s the good guy even-though I as the player killed very few people but because Joel was a psychotic I was stuck playing as this asshole. Sorry, a$$hole. His actions at the end of the game were unforgivable and made Ellie look like a moron. If it was a movie, I would have loved it. It’s a game though and forcing me to play as Joel was horrendous.

So imagine my delight when the marketing and gameplay of The Last of Us Part II showed off Ellie, not Joel. I was delighted. Didn’t know what the gameplay or story was about but a chance to significantly play as one of gaming’s greatest heroines is exciting. So this trailer is being shown, and more Ellie appears (Woop woop), it looks beautiful I guess (Everything looks good these days and photorealism just bores me now). It looks a little too sombre I’ll be honest, the first one rode that line but it threw in moments of levity so I enjoyed the rodeo. I’ll give this a chance. Ok here comes details about the plot! Yes, oh wait…I hope those bruises are just beatings (this series has already killed a child, let’s not have one with sexual assault please). From this she is going to hunt down the people who did this to her…to find revenge……like every other game……..yay.(Read my what I think about game plots in this post) Well, at least Joel is g- … sigh.

I will say this, Naughty Dog if you let me kill Joel, I will buy 10 copies for every person I know and give you a 10/10.

Watch the trailer below.

Release: 21st February 2020

Wattam – From the makers of Katamari Damacy comes a personified drug trip, for kids! It does look lovely though, giving players control over many creatures (even a toilet) and just makes me want to squeeze its cheeks. What is the actual game you ask? No idea thus I can’t get excited. Release: December 2019

Humanity – This is a… I want to say simulator? Where you simulate hordes of humans (that for some weird reason are all white). To have them die. No, let’s get this right – It’s Sony’s new effort to show the masses the power of the PS4. (After the day one patch of course). Release: 2020

Afterparty – You and your best friend adventure through Satan’s Hell defeating demons by, out partying them? Is that right? Well it’s from the makers of Oxenfree which was a delightful visual novel with no gameplay. This seems to have solved that issue with quirky situations so I’m excited! Release: 29th October 2019

Watch the trailers for these three games below:

Arise is the adventure I’ve been longing for

I’m glad someone else like’s A Bug’s life as much as I do.

This game looks exceptional to me. The issue with a large amount of deep indie games is that they forget to be fun. Games likes Inside, Oxenfree and The Gardens Between mostly constitutes of moving a stick in one direction and nothing else with little sense of joy. Arise shows interesting environments and ways of interacting. Want to glide on a flower majestically? Arise has got you covered (I hope that’s not just a cutscene).

This game is also truly beautiful. A large portion of the conversation will go to The Last of Us Part II and Call of Duty for their impressive rendition of realistic characters. However, Arise creates an art style, is colourful and visually engaging. and is comfortably the most beautiful game of the event.

What truly excites me is the sense of adventure I got from the trailer. You travel through multiple environments creating a memorable story. How? By making the player interact with the world, not having it interact with me. The game has a majestic sense of scale that makes you want to tackle the journey.

I’m enormously looking forward to Arise and I hope you are to, let’s hope it’s as good as it looks. Don’t believe me, check out the trailer below:

Release: Soon (You bastards Sony)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – A trailer for the plot of Call of Duty was shown. Because that’s what players want from COD. Plot. The photorealism is impressive but remains uninteresting and the world feels the same an excuse to shoot foreigners in the face. If you’re a fan of the franchise you should be excited and I actually enjoyed the original but I’m bored of it now. (Also this is a multi-platform game Sony, stop pretending it’s yours!). Release: October 2020

Civilisation VI – So this was announced, for those people who want to play a turn based strategy game on a controller. You monsters. Release: When you get a computer

MediEvil – A demo has been released and after playing it I am looking forward to enjoying the full version, mostly because of the charm. But still, I’ve always wanted to rip off my arm and beat someone to death with it. Release: October 2019

PS VR is still in full swing thankfully!

I’m so glad that Sony is keeping the PSVR alive because it is a great little affordable system and is one of the few reasons I still turn on my console (I’ll use any excuse to take my top off to be fair). They announced a few games so I’ll give the a quick rundown:

L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files – It’s the regular game, gameplay wise, but in first person. I’ve been so envious of Vive users and now it’s finally mine! Release: Out now?! Excuse me.

-one glorious game session later-

Gorn – I will be entertained immensely and I can actually have muscles, even if it is virtually. Looks great fun! Release: Winter 2019

Espire 1: VR Operative – This is a high budget VR game where they’ve gotten the movement right. These are a rarity and should be worshipped. Release: September 2019

Stardust Odyssey – I do love games with Odyssey in title but I’ve been in a spaceship so much in VR that it doesn’t intrigue me anymore. It does look like a high quality product so I will pay attention to reviews. Release: Winter 2019

After the fall – Zombie, shooter, bored, next. Release 2020

Space Channel 5 VR: Kinda Funky News Flash! – The game you envisioned from the title is actually pretty accurate. Just pretend you’re a young pink barbie interested child. Add those colours Release: Just imagine it to be honest.

In other news

There’s a new death stranding themed PS4! AND CONTROLLER! Whaaaaaat.

The new Playstation Plus games available for October are MLB the Show 19 and The Last of US

Overall this was a weak presentation. It included a large portion of games that looked uninteresting or game we already knew about showing nothing new of much relevance. (Yes I know Joel’s face was new but to me that’s a disadvantage if anything.) The announcement of Arise did make the presentation worth it and I love to see Sony supporting the PSVR.
