Welcome to The Platformer where we talk about games in an extremely amateur but fun way! This post is in regards to my Ultimate Video Game List where I’m on a journey to discover what my personal favourite game ever is. Will Nintendo’s leading fighting game Smash is its way to the top?

“Samus is the best character, fight me!”

“That’s the point…”

Super Smash Brothers Ultimate is a 2D brawler featuring gamings greatest icons (and the Wii Fit trainer) to see who can take the best beating. Unlike other fighting games the winner is not the person who loses their health, but the person who falls out of the stage, because there will be no button mashers aloud here! (Sorry Jerry from year 6 Tekken tournament). This slight difference in mechanic has given Smash Brothers a unique identity that keeps the players engaged, so why is this the best version? Through a combination of tweaking the speed, incredible character roster and depth of the game. This is the only way to play Smash Brothers. (Let’s let Melee die in peace)

This game is held in high regard in the competitive scene. However, I am not allowed in a competition because, well, would you allow a snail in a 100 metres race? No. (Also, apparently I’m quite scary when I lose). So when I say the speed is perfect for combat, I mean that newcomers and amateurs can play with the pro players while having a great time.

The speed creates a sense of satisfaction from landing your moves and whipping around the stage. The reaction time is just enough to feel bad about yourself for not dodging (this is a positive, trust me). The moves feel satisfying to land and matches don’t take too long, great for portable play on the switch. This game is fun injected right into my veins, it’s impossible to play this without a smile. (Please don’t try this at home)

Who do you control as you beat your friends to a pulp? Well, we have:

  • Mario (For people who love beige)
  • Donkey Kong (For those who like a big whack)
  • Link (If you choose Link, I fear you)
  • Samus (For sexy mother f#@$#s(me))
  • Dark Samus (Nintendo testing racial climates)
  • Yoshi (Prepare to say awwwwh a lot)
  • Kirby (Jesus)
  • Fox (Do you take things too seriously? Fox is the one for you)
  • Pikachu (For smart people)
  • Ness (You’re ambitious but probably terrible at the game)
  • Captain Falcon (Pepe the frog)
  • Bowser (Darth Vader of games, but boring)
  • Ice Climbers (You’re trying to hard to be retro)
  • Marth (You feel like you were meant to be Japanese weren’t you?)
  • Luc… Every character from Fire Emblem I think (Too many)
  • Mr Game and Watch (For those who are truly retro)
  • Pit (Luke Skywalker)
  • Snake (Obvious joke is obvious, snaaaaaaaaaaake)
  • Sonic (A logical reason to pulverise Mario)
  • Olimar (Embodiment of Niche)
  • R.O.B (Tell Skynet that they’re pretty cool)
  • Mega man (Reall tell Skynet that they’re cool)
  • Little mac (Misery loves company, and speed)
  • Pac-man (Two words that make a sound)
  • Shulk (The sex appeal
  • So many more

I’m tired now, just know that there are 69 (hehe) fighters in total with additional ones coming through DLC. That is a huge number of characters, yet they all feel, distinct thus discovering your ‘main’ is a wonderful process and I enjoy playing with 80% of the characters (I consider Luma 0.2 of a character). This means that the game will always look fresh and exciting and fun.

On the other hand, is there enough of the game to keep you coming back? Do you have infinite friends that you can play with 24/7? Hopefully not (because you know, slavery) otherwise this part of the review is pointless. Therefore what single-player features does Smash Brother Ultimate offer to keep player’s coming back? Well besides the general matches, there’s the return of classic mode however this time each character has their own specified battles, for example, Link’s final battle is Ganondorf (his arch-enemy). So it’s worth playing through every character in classic mode, of which there are 69, yeah there’s plenty of game here. But wait! there’s more, Spirit World.

Still haunts my nightmares

This is the ‘story mode’ of the game and it is brilliant. The plot is weak and the map sort of uncreative but the most memorable moments of the game for me was in this mode. The regular characters get linked with a spirit, taking on some of the characteristics of the spectral parasite. One fight, the hardest battle of the game (non-competitive) is a 1-1 battle against zero suit Samus with the spirit of The Boss from metal gear. You’re damn straight I was going to defeat her as Snake. The euphoria of victory that came over me was ecstatic while on the train. (I even made a sound). The story overall took me about 30 hours to complete so again, plenty of game here.

In conclusion Super Smash Brother Ultimate has, in my opinion, the best gameplay of the series and I’ve placed over 100 hours into the game and enjoyed every second of it. On top of that, the game has enough depth to keep the player coming back with interesting game modes. I do wish the story that comes along with Spirit world was more interesting and emotionally I didn’t get invested in the game, so it was essentially a toy. A really fun toy though.

I’m thoroughly playing high calibre games on my Switch and I do wish to carry on the trend. So I will go to hell and I’ll only come back covered in the blood of my enemies. Don’t touch me if you see me on the train as I will be playing…
