Welcome to The Platformer where we talk about games in an extremely amateur but fun way! This post is in regards to my Ultimate Video Game List where I’m on a journey to discover what my personal favourite game ever is. Doom is a classic franchise so it’s my duty! To give it the respect it deserves! hehe duty.
“You will see red, drenched in the blood of demons as adrenaline courses through your veins.”
The original doom came out in 1993 and revolutionised gaming, creating the ever-popular FPS genre. Safe to say that Doom ((2016) What happened to subtitles!?)) has come a long way, we’re all very proud, but no one expected a 23-year-old franchise to rejuvenate the genre. The enemies are not plain, human soldiers. (Who aren’t enemies anyway because they have the same reasons for fighting as you do!) No longer will you be crouching behind conveniently placed boxes for cover. No longer will every colour to pierce your cornea be variations of brown and grey, you will see red, drenched in the blood of demons as adrenaline courses through your veins. I always thought getting told to go to hell was an insult, turns out it’s a compliment.

Combat in Doom ((2016(I’m gonna start making up subtitles)) is visceral, intense, exciting, all adjectives that one would describe the feeling of going through a blender as you jump from platform to platform blowing demons away.
This is the appeal of Doom (Dickchainsaw) there is no moral ambiguity when killing demons, so you as the player allow yourself to get enveloped in the chaos. However, It’s not just mindless fun. Due to the variety of demons and weapons the player is forced to engage with the enemies differently as you need to discover the best strategy for total evisceration. This creates a fast, dynamic pace that results in the player feeling like the demon slaughtering badass they are.
The game takes place on a Mars space station with everything you would expect. That is if you expect: a labyrinth of cleverly woven corridors, open spaces for engaging combat and small sections with secrets to discover. (If that’s the case you’ve played some amazing games).

Each level is immensely expansive and always seem to finish at the right moment with minutes of levity and exploration splitting the fast-paced action. They aren’t closed off either, do you want to double track and find all the collectables like me? Well, you can! (I love you for that) The levels set in Hell are vastly different as well, truly making you feel like the outsider which juxtaposes the Mars environments where the demons feel like the foreign substance. Hell is a metal band playing three feet from your face and those levels come at just the right time when the cold stations start to get dull.
It’s not all great, the plot starts with the main character destroying the expositional robot with the only plot being ‘kill all the demons because they’re in the way’ which works. For a while.

he story eventually catches up, resulting in a bland, vague pursuit to seal the portal between Hell and Mars. (If anything I want direct access to the portal) Therefore the gameplay has to carry the 13-hour story. So does it? Unfortunately, not really. Long before the end of the game, you’ve become the embodiment of death and the challenge is no longer there. Thus the player doesn’t feel like a badass anymore, more like an overpowered boot stomping tiny insects.

To summarise Doom (Bloodlust) is a fantastic FPS and is a great entry in the historic franchise. The game is insanely fun, regrettably it does not last for the entire game as the pool of guns run out and the challenge diminishes. The story is forgettable but while the fun lasts, which is 8 hours anyway, it’s fantastic and I do not regret my time with it whatsoever. Due to the game running out of steam, I would have to rank it below Super Smash Bros. Ultimate which never got dull for me.
So we have definitely had some high calibre of games thus far, and Batman, so I want to play something weird, hopefully terrible. Sounds like a licensed game to me so next week I’ll be playing…
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Gameboy Adventure
